About Dil Muhallay Ki Haveli

In Radha Kishan Nagar, a suburban muhalla far from the Delhi dynasty she still carries in her bones, the haveli belongs to Amma Bi (Samina Ahmed). To Amma Bi, food is culture and culture is not up for discussion: she is exacting about taste, proudly old fashioned, and a slight mistake in the proportions of spices is a crime without pardon for the daughters-in-law cooking under her eye. Her three sons, Faheem, Azeem and Saad, arrange their lives around that rule, though the eldest, Azeem, has always had his eyes on his mother's inherited wealth rather than her recipes. Yumna Zaidi and Sami Khan lead a large ensemble (Noor ul Hassan, Adla Khan, Nadia Afgan, Sarmad Khoosat, Erum Akhtar) orbiting that stubborn centre of gravity, in a serial written by Amna Mufti and directed by Amin Iqbal.

Editor’s Take

Sami Khan is the reason to stay. Cast against the sweet also-ran he had been playing on loop, he finally gets a character with some edges, and it is the freshest thing here. Samina Ahmed's spice-measuring matriarch rules the haveli like a courtroom. Our gripe is the concept itself: Amna Mufti reaches for something clever about food, family and inheritance, and never quite makes us care whether the recipe survives. Watch it for the casting, not the cooking.
