About Ghughi
Adapted from Amrita Pritam's 1950 novel Pinjar, Ghughi drops you into Punjab on the eve of Partition, where a private grudge is about to be settled with a woman's life. Nirmala (Amar Khan) is a Hindu girl taken from her home the night before her wedding by Rasheed (Adnan Siddiqui), a Muslim man collecting on an old score against her family. Ruined by the scandal, her parents marry her younger sister Nikki to the man Nirmala was promised to, while Nirmala is left inside a household that has no use for her beyond what she represents. What follows is not a rescue story. It is a patient look at what captivity does to a woman, what guilt does to the man who caused it, and how little either of them controls once the border itself begins to move. Amna Mufti writes, Iqbal Hussain directs.
Editor’s Take
Adapting Pinjar takes nerve, and Amna Mufti's script has it. She keeps us inside Nirmala's ordinary days in that house, where the cruelty is domestic and constant, never staged, and Amar Khan carries it without reaching for the big weepy scene. The industry noticed: Lux Style Award nominations for the writing and the soundtrack. Our one gripe? The middle stretch settles into a single note of misery and holds it far too long. Bleak, beautifully made, and not remotely a comfort watch.
