About Iltija

Hina (Tooba Siddiqui) marries Sameer (Affan Waheed) for love, and for a while that feels like enough. Then their daughter Khushi is born with Down syndrome, and the marriage is asked a question neither of them rehearsed. Sameer keeps the house running and stays a loyal husband, but he cannot bring himself to be a father to the child he did not expect, and his mother (Rubina Ashraf) never wanted Hina anyway. Pushed out, Hina takes Khushi home to her own mother (Seemi Pasha) and begins fighting for a daughter almost nobody in either family will fight for. The one person who shows up is Hadi (Imran Ashraf), Khushi's teacher, who becomes the father figure Khushi's own father refuses to be. Saji Gul writes and Mazhar Moin directs, and Khushi is played by Caitlyn Espinherio, a young actress who has Down syndrome.

Casting Caitlyn Espinherio, a child who actually has Down syndrome, as Khushi is the bravest call this serial makes, and it turns a subject Pakistani TV usually skirts into something you cannot look away from. Dawn Images named it a serial of the year with a different story, and we get why. Our gripe? The awareness it reaches for keeps slipping its grip: critic Hira Hyder read the portrayal as stigmatising rather than educating, and that sting is fair. Big heart, unsteady hands.
