About Jackson Heights

Six South Asian expatriates share a few blocks of Queens in this Urdu1 ensemble, and not one of them is living the life their family back home imagines. Imran Bhatti (Noman Ejaz) is the cabbie the whole neighbourhood trusts, a man who has told his relatives in Pakistan that he owns the company he actually drives for, and whose fifteen years in New York rest on a paper marriage to the contemptuous Kathy. Salma (Aamina Sheikh) works the floor of a beauty salon as the sole earner for a sharp-tongued mother-in-law and a stepdaughter, until her husband Sikander (Ali Kazmi) walks out of prison and back into her house. Around them, Michelle (Marina Khan), Rizwan (Adnan Jaffar), and the newly arrived, hungrily ambitious Jamshed (Adeel Hussain) chase a version of home that America keeps rewriting. Vasay Chaudhry writes, Mehreen Jabbar directs, and the whole thing was shot on location in New York.

Editor’s Take

Noman Ejaz makes Imran Bhatti the warmest liar on television, a cabbie whose entire life is the story he tells his mother back home, and Ali Kazmi's Sikander sparks the room the second he walks back into it. This is Pakistani drama looking outward at immigrant survival instead of inward at the same drawing room. Our gripe? The camera keeps its distance exactly when the writing wants you close, and the middle stretch circles itself. A gold mine of a premise, mined about halfway.
