About Malal

Set between New York and Karachi, Malal begins with Zeenia (Deepti Gupta) and Danish (Faisal Rehman), close friends for a decade whose unspoken love has settled into the shape of a life together. When Danish returns to Pakistan, his mother dismisses Zeenia as too old and modern, then steers him into marrying the younger Mahi (Sarwat Gilani). The new marriage brings all three into an uneasy orbit in the United States: Danish keeps comparing his wife with the woman he left behind, while Mahi struggles to earn a place in a relationship that never began on equal terms. Into that emotional tangle steps Mahi's cousin Jawad (Imran Abbas), whose affection offers Zeenia a chance to rethink what love and compatibility can look like. Written by Umera Ahmed and directed by Mehreen Jabbar, this compact family drama favors layered conversations over stock villains, exploring age prejudice, selfish choices, second chances, and the quiet courage required to stop living for someone else's approval.

Editor’s Take

Mehreen Jabbar lets Umera Ahmed's conversations breathe, and the reward is a cast of flawed adults who feel observed rather than arranged into heroes and villains. Deepti Gupta gives Zeenia a lovely steeliness, while Sarwat Gilani makes Mahi's immaturity human instead of cartoonish. Our one gripe? The script gets fuzzy about the age gap between Zeenia and Jawad. Even so, its unhurried New York melancholy and clear-eyed belief in compatibility over convention still feel startlingly fresh.
