About O Rungreza

O Rungreza turns a family home into a vivid contest between admiration, ambition and double standards. Sassi (Sajal Aly) is the headstrong daughter of poet Khayyam Sani (Noman Ijaz), a man who dismisses his gentle wife Mumtaz (Irsa Ghazal) while idolising glamorous actress Sonia Jahan (Sana Fakhar). Hungry for the approval he withholds, Sassi decides to chase Sonia's image and an acting career of her own. Her rebellion unsettles the rules Khayyam imposes at home, exposing how easily he celebrates freedom in his muse but condemns it in his daughter. Beside her is Qasim (Bilal Abbas Khan), her soft-spoken cousin and devoted admirer, whose patient affection could not be further from Khayyam's possessiveness. Written by Saji Gul, this is an unusually colourful family drama about a young woman trying to define herself inside a world built from her father's contradictions, with romance, music and bruising generational conflict woven through her search for a voice.

Editor’s Take

Sajal Aly gives Sassi a thrilling, combustible confidence, and Saji Gul's gender-role reversal makes her clash with Noman Ijaz's hypocritical Khayyam feel sharper than standard family melodrama. We also love the colour-soaked staging and that unforgettable Sahir Ali Bagga title track. Our gripe? The later stretch drags and dulls some of the story's boldness. Even so, at its best, O Rungreza is daring television with paint under its fingernails.
