About Seeta Bagri
Seeta (Sarwat Gilani) comes from the Bagri clan, a Hindu community living in Karachi, and she has built her life around one stubborn conviction: the girls of her neighbourhood deserve to be taught, for free, whether or not anyone approves. Her father Badrinath (Qavi Khan) would rather see her settled in a marriage. Ratan Lal (Syed Jibran), the tenant who loves her, is sinking under his own debts. Nandini Daas (Bushra Ansari), who runs a small bangle business, is a power in the same tight circle of families. As Seeta keeps her little school open, a web of deceit, hatred and revenge tightens around her, and every choice she makes about her heart is weighed by the community that raised her. Written and directed by Iqbal Hussain, Seeta Bagri puts a rarely filmed Pakistani world on screen and hands its centre to a woman who will not be talked out of her work.
Editor’s Take
Iqbal Hussain shoots the Bagri quarter in colour you can almost smell, all bangles and dyed cotton, and Sarwat Gilani grows into Seeta with a quiet steel that suits her. Syed Jibran owns Ratan Lal outright. Our gripe? The early episodes pitch their emotions at Bollywood volume the story does not need, and rush past beats worth sitting in. Watch it for the world it builds, forgive it the melodrama.
