About Shehnai

In the middle of a sprawling joint family, carefree Bakht (Ramsha Khan) is convinced she has found true love in the charming but unreliable Hunain. Her parents, tired of watching proposals collapse, settle on Meerab (Affan Waheed), a mild-mannered chartered accountant recently returned from London. There is one hitch: Bakht plans to reject him, while Meerab is carrying romantic complications of his own. What begins as an unwanted match becomes a lively collision of secret loyalties, parental expectations and relatives who treat every engagement as family business.

Written by Radain Shah and directed by Ahmed Bhatti, Shehnai trades the usual wall-to-wall misery for romantic comedy rooted in the bustle of a Pakistani joint household. Ramsha Khan gives Bakht a headstrong spark, Affan Waheed makes Meerab an appealingly gentle counterweight, and veterans including Javed Sheikh, Samina Ahmad and Behroz Sabzwari fill the home with competing agendas. The result is a bright, crowded courtship where love must survive meddling relatives and mistaken certainty.

We also love how the crowded joint-family scenes feel lived-in, with Saleem Mairaj and the veteran ensemble turning every gathering into comic crossfire. Our one gripe? The romantic setup is familiar, so the story leans heavily on its performers and Ahmed Bhatti's nimble direction. Luckily, that cast keeps the celebration noisy, warm and thoroughly watchable.
