The Story Behind Fade
Fade is Ali Zafar's rap record, written, composed, produced and directed by him alone and released as a standalone single in October 2024. He makes no claim to the form. In the note published with the video he says he is no rapper, but the words arrived during a difficult stretch, and he went straight to the studio and recorded them raw and unfiltered.
What came back is bilingual by design: Urdu verses in a clipped, conversational flow set against an English chorus that is sung rather than spoken, so the track keeps sliding between argument and melody. The Express Tribune read it as a statement on the darker side of fame, on slander and gossip and what the industry costs an artist's mental health, and the video reaches for the look of old Hollywood's golden age to say the same thing.
Meaning & Translation
To fade is to withdraw from something rather than fight it, and the chorus is a decision rather than a complaint. Zafar sings it as an exit, telling whoever has worn him down to go, because staying would cost him his mind.
The Urdu verses carry the grievance the English chorus has already stopped arguing about: people who are hollow inside, quick to police each other and never themselves, walking around as though they were free while something inside keeps them captive. By the last verse the anger has burned down to tiredness. "Thak sa gaya hoon, ab jaane do", I am exhausted, let it go now. Fade ends with permission to stop, not with a verdict.
