The Story Behind Bebaak OST
HUM TV put Bebaak's title track online on 8 December 2021, the day the serial began, and gave the whole of it to one voice. Razia Abrar sings it alone for three minutes and thirty seven seconds, with no second vocalist billed to answer her, and Hidayat Sayer wrote the words she carries. The drama it opens was directed by Mohsin Talat and written by Abdul Khaliq Khan and Rakshanda Rizvi, and it follows Wafa (Yashma Gill), a scholarship student who decides the life she wants is worth more than the home she came from. Bebaak held a Monday to Friday slot for 52 episodes before closing on 18 February 2022, and was still drawing television ratings of four to five TRPs in that final February stretch, which is a long run for one voice to keep opening a story five nights a week.
Meaning & Translation
Bebaak is Urdu for fearless or outspoken, but the word is blunter than either translation suggests. Someone bebaak says the thing without softening it and without checking who is in the room, so it lands as a compliment or as an accusation depending entirely on who is using it. Applied to a woman in a household that expects her to be quieter, it is usually both at once. That double edge is what makes the title fit Wafa, who is admirably direct about wanting a bigger life and, in the same breath, unembarrassed about what she is willing to trade for it. The serial never settles which sense it means, and neither does its title song.
