The Story Behind Bulleya
Riaz Ali Khan's Bulleya brings Baba Bulleh Shah's celebrated Punjabi poem into Coke Studio Pakistan's second season. Released in 2009, the performance was produced by Rohail Hyatt, whose official archive now hosts the video. Khan approaches the text through an eastern classical voice, shaping the familiar verses with raags of his own composition. That choice gives the track a reflective, unhurried character: the melody does not crowd the poem's questions, but lets each phrase settle before the next arrives. Contemporary coverage of the season singled out the way Khan made this much-covered work his own. The result is both a Coke Studio session and a personal reading of a Sufi classic, grounded in the tension between formal vocal command and the poem's radical uncertainty about identity.
Meaning & Translation
Bulleya is a familiar way of addressing Bulleh Shah, and the central question asks what the speaker truly knows about his own identity. The poem answers by stripping away labels rather than choosing one. Faith and unbelief, purity and impurity, joy and sorrow, and the elements all fail to contain the self. Its meaning is not simple confusion. It is a Sufi challenge to the boundaries through which people define themselves and others. In Riaz Ali Khan's rendition, the returning question becomes a form of contemplation: certainty falls away, leaving humility, inward search, and the suggestion that the deepest self cannot be reduced to a social or religious category.
