The Story Behind Chaap Tilak
Hadiqa Kiani's 2017 rendition of "Chaap Tilak" is the fifth chapter of Wajd, Vol. 1, her project rooted in South Asia's folk and Sufi traditions. The Braj kalaam was written and originally composed by Amir Khusro in devotion to his spiritual guide, Nizamuddin Auliya. For this recording, Irfan Kiani added melodic improvisations, played harmonium, and handled production, mixing, and mastering. Nafees Ahmed's sitar and Rajvir's dholak give the arrangement an acoustic, celebratory pulse beneath Kiani's poised lead vocal. Kiani described the song as close to her heart and the Wajd sessions as an organic production built around eastern instruments. Abdullah Haris's video places that spiritual warmth inside a colorful mehndi celebration, turning a centuries-old Sufi text into an intimate scene of shared joy.
Meaning & Translation
The title "Chaap Tilak" joins two signs of outward identity: chaap is a mark or imprint, while tilak is a forehead adornment. Amir Khusro's poem describes a single transforming glance from the beloved as taking those signs of self away. In its Sufi reading, the beloved is the spiritual guide and, ultimately, the divine. Losing one's visible identity is therefore not defeat, but surrender as the ego dissolves in love. The poem's images of colored bangles and becoming a bride give mystical union the language of marriage. Hadiqa Kiani's celebratory rendition preserves both layers, allowing the song to feel romantic and festive while expressing complete spiritual devotion.
