The Story Behind Anbhol
Sanam Marvi's "Anbhol" came to Coke Studio 2020 as a Punjabi tale of wounded worldly love opening into spiritual awakening. Rohail Hyatt produced and arranged the performance, with Asim Raza credited for the words; Coke Studio identifies the otherwise uncredited composition with Raag Aiman. Marvi begins in lament, then stretches the melody toward devotional release as Rohail Hyatt's keyboards, Shehroze Hussain's sitar and Nawazish Nasri's rabab bring plucked and sustained colors around her voice. Meaning & Translation
"Anbhol" means acting unknowingly or in innocence. The speaker gives her heart before understanding love's cost, then hides her tears as separation spreads through body and mind. Images of Ranjha as a jogi place the heartbreak inside Punjabi mystical tradition, where longing for a human beloved can become a path toward the divine. The song's emotional turn matters: private grief is not the destination. By giving her heart to the true beloved, the speaker moves from unstable worldly attachment toward ishq-e-haqiqi, enduring love of God. What begins as regret therefore becomes surrender, recognition and spiritual consolation.
