The Story Behind Pardesiya

Pardesiya arrived in the third episode of Coke Studio 2020 as an original by classically trained singer and composer Zara Madani, with words by Asim Raza. Rohail Hyatt produced and arranged the recording, shaping its Raag Bhimpalasi foundation into slow-burning raga rock. Asad Ahmed's electric guitar adds the harder edge, while Shehroze Hussain's sitar, Nawazish Nasri's rabab and Siddhartha Maharjan's bell percussion keep the texture rooted in South Asian color. Backing vocalists Wajiha Naqvi, Nimra Rafiq, Kumail Jaffery and Shahab Hussain broaden Madani's solitary call without becoming billed leads. Released in December 2020, the performance turns a search for peace and divine answer into an expansive nine-minute arc, moving from inward classical phrasing toward a fuller rock release.

Meaning & Translation

Pardesiya addresses one who has gone away, a distant beloved whose absence leaves the speaker restless. The word grows beyond a simple traveler or outsider: the missing figure becomes the answer the soul keeps seeking. The song begins in the language of separation, with the heart unable to loosen its knots or find peace, then opens into a prayer for guidance and return. Its romantic imagery and devotional intent coexist, so longing for a person can also be heard as longing for God. That ambiguity is central to the piece. Distance is not only geographical; it is the inner space between distress and serenity, while the repeated appeal turns desire into a patient spiritual search.
