The Story Behind Ha Gulo
Ha Gulo introduced Qasamir, a four-member Kashmiri folk ensemble led by Altaf Mir, as the fifth and final release from Coke Studio Explorer in July 2018. Producers Ali Hamza and Zohaib Kazi traveled to Muzaffarabad for a performance built around a classic poem by Ghulam Ahmad Mahjoor. Mir's voice leads the recording, while Ghulam Mohammad Dar's sarangi, Saifuddin Shah's tumbaknaer, and Manzoor Ahmad Khan's nout give the arrangement its distinctly Kashmiri pulse. Electronic textures sit beneath those traditional instruments without smoothing away their character. The release carried a Kashmiri-language folk song to an unusually broad international audience and brought national attention to musicians whose lives also included work in broadcasting, handicrafts, cooking, and driving.
Meaning & Translation
The title Ha Gulo means "Oh Flower" in Kashmiri. Mahjoor's poem turns to flowers and a nightingale as messengers, asking whether they have seen the speaker's absent beloved and can help bring the lovers together. The natural imagery makes the search feel tender rather than abstract: a garden becomes a place where longing can speak. Hope stretches from today into tomorrow, but waiting slowly consumes youth, so the romance carries the ache of separation as well as devotion. In Qasamir's rendition, the bright rhythmic lift does not erase that sadness. It gives the plea motion, as if the singer keeps searching even while time passes.
