The Story Behind Baanware
Baanware pairs Shuja Haider and Aima Baig in a romantic dialogue created for the 2017 finale of Coke Studio Pakistan's tenth season. Haider wrote, composed, and music-directed the performance, while Strings produced and directed it. The arrangement lets the singers trade longing and uncertainty before their voices meet in the refrain. Nylon-string guitar from Amir Azhar and flute from Sajid Ali soften the broad house-band and string-section setting, giving the eight-minute performance an intimate pull despite its scale. The song also folds in Bhooli Bisri, an older piece originally sung by Mehdi Hasan with lyrics by Syed Raza Tirmazi, creating a bridge between a new composition and Pakistan's romantic repertoire.
