The Story Behind Naina Moray
Naina Moray arrived in the fourth episode of Coke Studio Season 10 on 1 September 2017, carrying the last performance Aamir Zaki ever recorded. The guitarist had died of cardiac arrest that June, three months before the song aired, and his solo stole a show he was no longer alive to see.
The song itself is far older, a traditional thumri in Raag Bhairavi carried into the modern repertoire by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Jaffer Zaidi built the arrangement around that lineage, letting Gul Muhammad's sarangi hold the raag steady while Javed Bashir and Akbar Ali trade phrases across it, two classically trained voices circling the same ache. Strings produced the session. What makes the ten minute recording linger is the collision at its centre, a courtly thumri answered by an electric guitar that would never play again.
Meaning & Translation
Naina moray means my eyes, and in the thumri tradition the eyes are never just eyes. They are where longing shows. The refrain, naina morey taras rahe hain, translates roughly as my eyes ache with waiting, and what follows calls to a beloved who went far away and never came back.
North Indian classical poetry has a name for that condition, viraha, the pain of separation, and it is the emotional territory Raag Bhairavi has always been used to open. Nothing in the text is dramatic. Someone waits, watches the road, and admits the waiting has started to hurt. Javed Bashir and Akbar Ali sing it as ache rather than complaint, and Zaki's guitar answers like the one who left.
