The Story Behind Gaddiye
Gaddiye brought Asrar together with veteran folk singer Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi for Coke Studio Season 11's second episode in August 2018. Produced and directed by Zohaib Kazi and Ali Hamza, the performance sets Asrar's Punjabi writing beside a Seraiki dohra by Sohna Khan Bewas, with both singers shaping the composition. The pairing bridges two generations of Pakistani folk expression: Asrar's sharp, urgent delivery meets Esakhelvi's weathered authority. A driving dholak pulse, electric guitar and Haniya Aslam's additional instrumentation push the traditional material into a bright, high-energy studio arrangement. The song turns longing into motion rather than stillness, using dance, travel and reunion as its emotional engine. That blend of contemporary force and Sufi-inflected folk storytelling made Gaddiye one of the more distinctive experiments in the season's second episode.
Meaning & Translation
Gaddiye literally addresses a motorcar, but the vehicle becomes a playful companion on a spiritual journey. The singer urges it toward the distant home of the beloved, turning gears, roads and a mechanic into metaphors for desire, effort and inner repair. Around that lively image, the Punjabi and Seraiki verses reject social convention and pride in favor of surrender. Dancing signifies freedom from worldly restraint, while the beloved can be heard as both a human love and the divine presence of Sufi poetry. Separation burns, reunion promises renewal, and repeated invocations of the Creator anchor the humor in devotion. The song's exuberance therefore carries a serious idea: love moves the seeker beyond ego.
