The Story Behind Baalkada
Baalkada brought Lucky, Naghma and Jimmy Khan together for the opening episode of Coke Studio Season 11 in 2018. Written and composed by all three singers, the Punjabi folk song was produced by Zohaib Kazi and Ali Hamza. The performance also marked the first appearance of transgender artists on the Coke Studio stage, with Lucky and Naghma sharing the spotlight alongside Khan. Its tappa-style melody is recast as a bright studio groove: Babar Khanna's dholak supplies the folk pulse, while Kamran "Mannu" Zafar's whimsical bass line and the modern synth arrangement add funk. Meaning & Translation
Baalkada is an affectionate Punjabi word for a boy or young son, used here like "darling boy." The refrain celebrates a beloved child from a proud family, surrounded by blessings, sweets and wedding-style festivity. Yet the song is more than a teasing family chorus. Lucky and Naghma turn its playful call-and-response into a statement of visibility and resilience: the speaker recalls being pushed out, mocked and made to cry, then insists on rising, refusing to hide and continuing to fly.
