The Story Behind Ilallah

Ilallah brought Karachi ensemble Sounds of Kolachi to Coke Studio Pakistan in Season 11, with bandleader Ahsan Bari writing and composing the piece and season producers Zohaib Kazi and Ali Hamza shaping the session. Released in Episode 6 in September 2018, the performance turns a search for spiritual certainty into a patient nine-minute orchestral ascent. Ahsan Bari leads the vocals, while Nimra Rafiq's solo passage broadens the ensemble voice. Gul Muhammad's bowed sarangi and Waqas Hussain's sitar answer the singers with phrases that feel almost conversational. Eastern ragas, layered voices, rock instrumentation and Western harmony gather gradually around the central invocation, giving Sounds of Kolachi a distinctive Coke Studio debut: expansive, searching and rooted in the group's collaborative sound.

Meaning & Translation

Ilallah draws on the Arabic declaration "illa Allah," meaning "except God" or, within the full declaration of faith, "there is no god but God." The song follows a restless seeker who has heard other people explain the path but still feels surrounded by darkness. Love appears at once as human longing and divine devotion: the absent beloved becomes the Creator sought through surrender, remembrance and inward listening. Images of lamps burning through the night, dawn arriving without the beloved, and a heart sinking deeper as it searches capture both ache and awakening. The refrain resolves that tension as an epiphany, suggesting that the answer was not outside the seeker but heard within the humbled heart.
