The Story Behind Chal Raha Hoon

Umair Jaswal wrote Chal Raha Hoon in his university years, long before Coke Studio, and kept it as a private song about heartbreak and loss until Season 12 gave it a stage. It arrived in Episode 3 on 8 November 2019, the season Rohail Hyatt returned to produce after five years away, and it is the rare Coke Studio entry that belongs almost entirely to its performer: Jaswal is credited as its writer, its composer and its only voice.

The arrangement knows to stay out of his way. A sitar line threads through the verses while the band holds back, and Jaswal, a vocalist better known for full-throated rock, sings most of it in a low, bruised register. The restraint is the whole performance. He is a singer who rarely restrains anything, and here he sounds like a man talking himself through something rather than performing it.

Meaning & Translation

Chal Raha Hoon is Urdu for I am still walking, or more loosely, I am keeping going. The phrase carries the shrug of someone who has stopped explaining himself. The song is not really about the break itself; it is about the long stretch afterward, when grief has settled into a walking pace instead of an event. Jaswal keeps returning to that one admission, chal raha hoon, and each repetition sounds less like recovery than like a refusal to stop. Around it he gathers images of darkness and of a road with no visible end. The comfort on offer is deliberately small: not that the pain lifts, only that you are still moving through it.
