The Story Behind Chaap Tilak
Coke Studio Pakistan brought Abida Parveen and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan together for Chaap Tilak in Season 7, Episode 6, released in November 2014. Produced by Strings, the performance revisits Amir Khusrau's enduring qawwali through two contrasting classical voices: Parveen's slow, searching phrases meet Khan's quick alaaps and sargams. Jaffer Ali Zaidi's piano opens the arrangement in Raag Yaman before guitars, Humnawa's chorus, drums, and tabla steadily widen the sound. The episode marked Khan's return to Coke Studio after appearing in its first season, while Parveen was making her third appearance of Season 7. Instead of treating the centuries-old work as a museum piece, the production lets the singers trade intensity until the ensemble reaches a long, buoyant crescendo.
Meaning & Translation
Chaap tilak joins two images of identity: chaap is an imprint or mark, while tilak is an adornment worn on the forehead. Amir Khusrau's speaker says that one meeting of eyes has taken away every outward sign of the separate self. The language of romance then becomes Sufi devotion. Love is imagined as an intoxicating drink, the beloved's color transforms the seeker, and bridal imagery expresses complete spiritual union. The final devotion is directed toward Khusrau's master, Nizamuddin Auliya. In this reading, surrender is not defeat. It is the joyful loss of ego that allows the seeker to belong wholly to the beloved.
