The Story Behind Sayon
Sayon brought Mekaal Hasan Band's reading of Bulleh Shah's Punjabi Sufi kaafi to the opening episode of Coke Studio Pakistan's eighth season in 2015. The piece had appeared on the band's album Andholan, and guitarist-producer Mekaal Hasan described it as a successor to the earlier MHB song Jhok Ranjhan. For Coke Studio, Strings produced a compact performance that keeps the band's classic-rock frame while leaving room for the melody's devotional lift. Guest musician Abid Ali's flute threads through the guitars and steady groove, giving the arrangement an airy countervoice. The result places an old mystical poem inside a modern rock setting without losing its celebratory Punjabi character.
Meaning & Translation
Sayon is a Punjabi address to female friends or companions. The speaker invites them to gather and offer congratulations because Ranjha, her beloved, has entered her courtyard. In Bulleh Shah's Sufi imagery, Ranjha is more than the hero of a love story: he represents the divine beloved, while the joyful union points to spiritual awakening. The poem balances celebration with surrender. The speaker accepts pain like a bargain and carries a bundle of sorrow without measuring profit or loss. That contrast turns earthly romance into a devotional lesson, suggesting that true love asks for wholehearted acceptance before it brings reunion.
