The Story Behind Rockstar

Ali Zafar brought "Rockstar" to Coke Studio Pakistan's eighth season in 2015, returning to the platform after a six-year gap. The original song appeared in episode two, with Strings producing and its members Bilal Maqsood and Faisal Kapadia sharing songwriting credits with Zafar. Rather than polishing celebrity into myth, the performance plays it as bright, knowing theatre. Zafar switches between a high register and a swaggering baritone while the arrangement moves through pop rock, jazzy turns, emphatic strings, Mannu Zafar's bass, and bursts of harmonium and flute. That restless staging matches the joke at the song's centre: Zafar said its exaggerated star was shaped by how he imagined rock musicians as a child, mixed with a little of the glamorous life he already knew.

Meaning & Translation

"Rockstar" literally names a celebrated rock performer, but here it becomes a comic costume for fame. Ali Zafar performs an outsized celebrity who treats every party as his stage, flaunts his body and style, ignores advice, and assumes that success and romance arrive on demand. The English labels "rockstar," "popstar," and "superstar" become boastful badges, while the Urdu and Punjabi verses keep puncturing the pose with playful exaggeration. Beneath the swagger, the song is teasing vanity: the character wants to look rebellious and irresistible so badly that his self-promotion becomes the joke. Zafar's animated delivery makes the fantasy entertaining, but the satire keeps it from becoming simple hero worship.
