The Story Behind Jhalliya
Jhalliya arrived in the fifth episode of Coke Studio Pakistan's ninth season in 2016, pairing Javed Bashir's agile, high-reaching voice with Masooma Anwar's darker, grounded tone. Faakhir Mehmood composed and directed the music, while Strings produced the session. Shahzad Nawaz appears between the sung passages to recite poetry by Bulleh Shah, joined by additional writing from Sabir Zafar and Bashir. The arrangement begins intimately, then gathers force through an insistent bass line, electric guitars, dholak, strings, and a bright banjo interlude. Contemporary reviews singled out the contrast between the two lead voices and the way its Sufi core meets soft rock without losing clarity. Meaning & Translation
Jhalliya is an affectionate Punjabi address meaning “O foolish one.” The song warns this imagined innocent that love is not a slogan or a fair exchange. Real ishq asks for constancy, sleeplessness, shared pain, and the surrender of any demand that affection be returned. Its references to Ranjha becoming a wandering jogi and to the Sufi martyr Mansur Hallaj widen the beloved beyond ordinary romance. In that tradition, longing can also describe the soul's search for the divine. The alternating voices make the lesson feel communal: love transforms a person only when it is lived, not merely spoken about.
