The Story Behind Paar Chanaa De
Paar Chanaa De arrived in the fourth episode of Coke Studio Pakistan's ninth season in 2016, and it carried something personal for the band behind it. Music directed by Noori, the brothers Ali Noor and Ali Hamza, the song was a Punjabi folk piece their grandparents had passed down to them, a family treasure they finally recorded under the production of Strings. They built it as a duet, pairing the Indian playback singer Shilpa Rao with their own voices over an earthy, indie-rock soundscape. What lingers is Noor Zehra's Sagar Veena, the rare bowed instrument whose deep, resonant groove threads through the track and gives its slow build an almost tidal pull. The result is patient and grand, a folk lament dressed in modern rock without losing its old soul.
Meaning & Translation
The title is a plea in Punjabi: paar chanaa de means "ferry me across the Chenab," the river that separates a lover from her beloved. The words draw on the old Punjabi tragedy of Sohni and Mahiwal, in which Sohni swims the Chenab each night on a baked clay pot to reach Mahiwal on the far bank. One night a jealous relative swaps the fired pot for an unbaked one that dissolves in the current, and Sohni drowns. Sung as a desperate, tender appeal to the water itself, the song turns that legend into a meditation on love that refuses to measure the cost of crossing.
