The Story Behind Mehram
Mehram is Coke Studio Season 14's intimate portrait of love after trust has collapsed, sung as a bruised conversation between Asfar Hussain and Arooj Aftab. Curator Xulfi developed the song with Hussain through long discussions about heartbreak, acceptance, and longing. Hussain then wrote both sides of the relationship before Aftab was invited to become its answering voice. Hussain and Xulfi composed the piece, with Hussain writing the lyrics and Xulfi adding lines, while Abdullah Siddiqui, Xulfi, and Aftab shaped the arrangement and production. A ghostly fragment of Aftab's voice beneath Hussain's chorus makes the loss feel present rather than remembered. Released in January 2022, the collaboration pairs Hussain's direct ache with Aftab's measured, unconventional phrasing.
Meaning & Translation
In Urdu, mehram here means the person trusted with one's innermost self, a confidant who knows what others cannot. The song turns that bond into a wound: someone once granted complete emotional access has become distant, leaving the shared home of the relationship hollow. Its two voices do not simply trade blame. They sound like separate memories of the same collapse, each carrying abandonment, regret, and the frustration of words that never reached the other person. The central idea is therefore larger than an ordinary breakup. It is the grief of losing both a beloved and the safety of being fully known. Longing remains, but so does a weary acceptance that intimacy cannot be restored by memory alone.
