The Story Behind Maza Aya
Ali Zafar released Maza Aya in October 2023, presenting it as a cricket anthem timed to the 2023 World Cup, with Hashim Nawaz featured alongside him. Zafar wrote, composed and produced the track, while Ali Mustafa handled additional music production and shared the arrangement. Nadeem Mushtaq added extra keys, and Nimra Rafiq, Shahmir Quidwai and Hasan Amin supplied backing vocals.
The record is built around a brisk call-and-response hook, moving from crowd chants into Hashim Nawaz's rhythmic feature. That shape makes it less a match report than a celebration of cricket's shared feeling: anticipation, friendly bravado and the release of a clean hit. The official video turns the same energy into a colorful fan spectacle, directed and produced by Zafar himself.
Meaning & Translation
Maza aya is an everyday Urdu phrase meaning "that was fun" or "I enjoyed that." In the song, it becomes a question and answer shared by performer and crowd. Excitement is measured in a racing heart, a swinging bat and the pleasure of singing together.
The verses turn a cricket match into a language of confidence and collective hope. The players carry national pride, while supporters answer uncertainty with noise, movement and belief. Rather than dwelling on victory alone, the refrain celebrates the rush of the game itself: gathering with others, watching a bold shot land and feeling a whole crowd respond at once.
