The Story Behind Dastaan-e-Ishq

Dastaan-e-Ishq is Ali Zafar's folk-rooted performance from Coke Studio Pakistan Season 2, produced by Rohail Hyatt and first aired in the 2009 episode "Harmony." Zafar composed the piece with flautist Baqir Abbas, drawing inspiration from Saieen Zahoor's Nachna Painda Hai and setting his own writing beside verses associated with Sufi poets Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain. The arrangement moves as a slow spiritual ascent: Abbas's flute threads through the ensemble while Zafar shifts from restraint to an impassioned, devotional delivery. The session introduced a song that Zafar later reworked for his 2011 album Jhoom, but the Coke Studio rendition retains the immediacy of a live folk fusion performance. Its blend of contemporary melody, traditional verse, and Sufi imagery makes it a bridge between pop authorship and older Punjabi poetic traditions.

Meaning & Translation

Dastaan-e-Ishq means "a tale of love." Here, ishq is more than romance: it is the Sufi idea of love so complete that the boundary between lover and beloved begins to disappear. The narrator describes love as a long, demanding road, then turns inward, asking the beloved to enter and dwell within. Images of Ranjha, ecstatic dance, pilgrimage, and surrender suggest that true devotion is proved through transformation rather than social approval. The verses associated with Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain deepen that spiritual reading. Together, they present love as both wound and awakening, a force that strips away pride until the seeker can see the beloved everywhere and the self as secondary.
