The Story Behind Gallan
Gallan is Ali Azmat's Punjabi rock performance from Coke Studio Season 1, produced by Rohail Hyatt in 2008. The song also appears on Azmat's solo album Klashinfolk, with lyrics credited to Sabir Zafar. This four-and-a-half-minute recording preserves a performance from the show's opening season, before the later archive upload that brought it to Hyatt's YouTube channel.
In a contemporary Instep interview, fellow participant Zeeshan Parwez recalled how Azmat encouraged the musicians to bring energy to the stage. Gallan's short, insistent phrases and recurring wordless hook give its questioning lyric a direct, conversational shape. The refrain repeatedly circles back to what remains to be said, placing the singer's restless address at the centre of the performance.
Meaning & Translation
Gallan is Punjabi for "talk" or "conversations", and the song turns that everyday word into a question about love, friction and unfinished exchanges. The speaker recalls things said plainly or indirectly, then wonders what words still belong to either person. Defiant passages sit beside an admission that life feels empty without the loved one. Images of evening, vacant mornings and newly lit lamps give absence and reunion a familiar, domestic scale. The repeated questioning suggests that speaking more does not necessarily bring understanding. Beneath the swagger, there is a need for closeness that all the arguments have failed to erase.
