The Story Behind Hanstay Hanstay Youn Hi Hum Chalen
Ali Zafar's "Hanstay Hanstay Youn Hi Hum Chalen" belongs to Pakistan's Defence and Martyrs Day commemoration of 2015. ISPR's official video names him as the singer and identifies the occasion, although the upload itself was posted in January 2018. Sahir Ali Bagga is credited with the composition and songwriting on ISPR's later compilation release. That 2018 collection places the recording among patriotic songs from several years, giving this tribute a second home beyond its original commemorative setting. The doubled "Hanstay" gives the title a gentle, lilting rhythm before the first note. Within a day devoted to remembering service and loss, its invitation to keep moving offers hope alongside remembrance. At just over four minutes, the official video presents the complete song rather than a short event teaser.
Meaning & Translation
The title means roughly "Let us keep going like this, smiling." In Urdu, "hanstay hanstay" repeats the act of smiling, while "youn hi hum chalen" turns it into a shared wish to carry on. The word "hum" makes the speaker collective: the journey belongs to a group rather than one person. In a Defence and Martyrs Day tribute, the smile reads as resolve in the face of loss, not as a claim that loss has vanished. The phrase holds remembrance and hope together. People can honour those who served while continuing forward with warmth toward one another.
