The Story Behind Harkalay
Harkalay brought Zahoor and REHMA together for Coke Studio Pakistan Season 15, pairing Pashto expression with English-language pop. Curated and produced by Xulfi, the 2024 track was composed by Zahoor, Xulfi, REHMA, Curly Ney and Saad Bukhari, with music arranged and produced by Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui. Its title means "welcome," and the collaboration frames cultural difference as an invitation rather than a barrier. The arrangement opens sparsely beneath Zahoor's grounded vocal, then gathers percussion, synths and REHMA's soaring response before the pair meet in a rapid call-and-response bridge. Meaning & Translation
"Harkalay" means "welcome" in Pashto. The song uses that idea as both a greeting and an emotional promise: two people from different worlds make room for one another without asking either person to erase their identity. Zahoor's Pashto voice carries devotion and steadiness, while REHMA's English response gives voice to fear, vulnerability and surrender. Their exchange treats love as a language that can cross geography and speech. Rather than translating every line literally, the refrain can be understood as an open door to the heart.
