The Story Behind Hum Mustafavi Hain
Ali Zafar's 2022 rendition of "Hum Mustafavi Hain" revives the anthem created for the 1974 Islamic Summit Conference in Lahore, with Jamil Uddin Aali's words, Sohail Rana's composition, and Mehdi Zaheer's original voice at its foundation. Released for the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, the new version arrived days after the United Nations designated 15 March as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, giving its call for solidarity fresh public context. Zafar and Baqir Abbas recreated and produced the music. Abbas also shaped the arrangement through programming and flute, Amir Azhar supplied guitar and bass, and Salman Albert played live drums. The backing voices of Manwa Sisters, Alistair Alvin, Salman Albert, and Zain broaden the refrain into a communal declaration, while the flute adds a reflective thread beneath the anthem's ceremonial sweep.
Meaning & Translation
"Hum Mustafavi Hain" means "We are the people of Mustafa," with Mustafa, "the chosen one," used as an honorific for the Prophet Muhammad. The title frames Muslim identity through shared spiritual allegiance rather than nationality. Moving among Urdu, Arabic, and Persian, the song presents unity as both faith and collective responsibility: people separated by borders are asked to recognize one moral community, resist division, and stand against prejudice. Its repeated declaration works less like a private prayer than a public pledge. In this 2022 rendition, the message also speaks to coexistence, asking listeners to turn religious belonging into solidarity, dignity, and respect for others.
