The Story Behind Jo Meray

Jo Meray brings Noori's reflective rock songwriting into Coke Studio Pakistan's second season. Released in 2009 and produced for the session by Rohail Hyatt, the performance revisits a song Ali Hamza composed, wrote and sang for Noori's 2005 album Peeli Patti Aur Raja Jani Ki Gol Dunya. Hamza later described the Coke Studio recording as an early step in his development as a composer and producer, and as only a glimpse of the song he still hoped to complete. The arrangement opens the original slow, inward mood into a fuller live performance while preserving its sense of emotional unease. Noori remains the billed act, with Hamza's restrained delivery carrying a piece built around thoughts and feelings that resist easy expression.

Meaning & Translation

The title "Jo Meray" can be understood as "that which is mine" or "those who are mine." The song turns inward, following a speaker whose mind, body and words seem to pull in different directions. Feelings are present and urgent, yet they are difficult to voice, creating the helplessness at the centre of the piece. Images of a swaying mind and the changing light of evening suggest uncertainty rather than a neat declaration of love. By the close, nearness and companionship offer a fragile point of reassurance: what truly belongs to the speaker is found in the life and presence already beside them. The meaning is less a linear story than an emotional argument with oneself.
