The Story Behind Jogi
Jogi opened Coke Studio Pakistan's sixth season in October 2013, pairing Fariha Pervez's poised lead with qawwal Muazzam Ali Khan. Rohail Hyatt arranged and produced this studio interpretation of Bulleh Shah's Punjabi verse, built on the qawwali composition by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The session broadens that devotional core with a Serbian house band, brass and strings, while a Pakistani dhol group keeps its folk pulse close to home. Trumpeter Milos Nikolic and dhol player Babar Ali Khanna stand out in an arrangement that moves between reflective longing and a supple, syncopated groove. Pervez carries the central plea with controlled ornamentation, and Khan answers with qawwali variations that deepen the dialogue. The result is both an opening statement for Season 6 and a vivid meeting of Punjabi Sufi tradition with an unusually international ensemble.
Meaning & Translation
Jogi means an ascetic or spiritual seeker, but in Bulleh Shah's Punjabi verse the figure also becomes the beloved guide who can lead the speaker beyond the surface of worldly life. The song is voiced as a woman's longing to accompany that guide and surrender the ego, not simply as a tale of romantic separation. Her desire to leave worldly entanglements expresses a Sufi search for the divine source within. Fariha Pervez's repeated plea gives that surrender an intimate urgency, while Muazzam Ali Khan's qawwali responses turn it into a shared act of devotion. The music holds joy and ache together: love promises awakening, yet reaching it requires the self to loosen its grip.
