Kamlee is Hadiqa Kiani's solo performance from the opening episode of Coke Studio Pakistan Season 5, released in May 2012. Producer Rohail Hyatt frames Bulleh Shah's Punjabi Sufi poetry with an arrangement that begins in an echo-rich hush, allowing Kiani's controlled phrases to carry the spiritual tension. Meaning & Translation
Kamlee is the feminine Punjabi form of kamla, meaning someone mad or lost in love. In this Sufi setting, that madness is spiritual rather than merely romantic: the speaker is consumed by longing for the beloved, who can also be understood as the divine. Bulleh Shah's verses challenge outward displays of learning and worship when a person has not examined the self.
