Khudsar is the title track ARY Digital released on 9 April 2024 for its daily serial of the same name, composed and co-sung by Adrian David with Rahma Ali. Usman Tariq wrote the words. Adrian David is one of the busiest hands in the current Pakistani OST business, and this is a characteristic piece of that work: two and a half minutes, two voices, no room to wander.

The serial it introduces was directed by Syed Faisal Bukhari and Syed Ali Bukhari from a script by Asma Sayani, and it belongs to Shazma (Zubab Rana), a woman whose vanity runs the whole show and who trades up the moment a better offer appears. Humayoun Ashraf and Sehar Afzal play the people left in her wake. ARY issued the track as a single on streaming services the following week, and a separate Lo-Fi version followed.

Meaning & Translation

Khudsar is Urdu for self-willed or headstrong, built from khud, meaning self or own, and sar, meaning head. A person called khudsar goes their own way whatever anyone else is asking, and the word carries a clear edge of disapproval: it shades from stubborn into arrogant, from independent into impossible. ARY did not pick it as a compliment. The serial hands the word to Shazma as a diagnosis rather than a description, and naming the title track after her fault, rather than after a lyric or a lover, tells you where the story's sympathies are going to sit.
