The Story Behind Kinaray
Atif Aslam released Kinaray on 14 February 2025 as the fourth episode of Borderless World Season 1. The project was introduced as a collaborative programme for musicians and visual artists, and this recording reaches into classical repertoire: Kinaray revisits the bandish Kinare Darya Kashti Bandho, attributed to Ustad Tanras Khan of the Delhi gharana. The official credits name Tanras Khan for the composition and Ahsan Pervaiz Mehdi for the music. Atif carries the compact, prayer-like text through a recurring riverbank refrain, letting repetition create a calm, meditative arc. Adnan Qazi directed the video, while Jayakrishnan Nalinkumar handled the mix and master. The result places a historic Hindustani composition inside Aslam's modern collaborative series without losing its devotional stillness.
Meaning & Translation
Kinaray means at the shore or along the banks. The song imagines a boat on the river of love, exposed to rising waves and searching for a safe place to be tied. Its appeal to Khizar invokes the legendary guide of travellers, turning the crossing into both a romantic and spiritual journey. The boatman stands for the vulnerable self, while the shore suggests steadiness, mercy and arrival. Repetition makes the request feel like a prayer: when love becomes an overwhelming sea, guidance is what keeps the traveller from being carried away. The song is less a narrative than a compact meditation on trust.
