The Story Behind Yaad
Yaad is Hadiqa Kiani's 2022 return to one of her early original compositions, released as the fourth music video from her Vasl project. Kiani described Vasl as a reunion with her musical roots, rebuilding songs from the beginning of her career with modern acoustic textures while preserving the raw voice and organic instruments. She wrote the poetry and composition and performs the vocal, with Hassan Badshah handling the music arrangement. The organic Eastern setting keeps the melody and Kiani's phrasing at the centre. Shot by Jovi Films, the video pairs Kiani with actor Nauman Ijaz in a story of love remembered after separation. Its images echo the song's central feeling: absence can empty the present, while memory keeps an emotional bond vividly alive.
Meaning & Translation
Yaad means memory or remembrance in Urdu. The song speaks from the quiet aftermath of separation, when the beloved's name returns before the person does. Roads feel deserted, evening renews the ache for companionship, and tears seem to blur the whole world. Its recurring thought is simple but piercing: the heart remembers as soon as it names the absent loved one. Hope has not vanished completely, because the narrator still imagines an unexpected reunion and asks the beloved to return. Memory is therefore both a refuge and a wound, preserving love while making the distance newly painful each time it surfaces.
