The Story Behind Lala-e-Sehrai (Flower of the Desert)
Rohail Hyatt composed and produced Lala-e-Sehrai for Pakistan's pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020, shaping a nearly 14-minute soundtrack as a tour through several musical traditions. Released on his channel in October 2021, it opens with Ali Akbar's Raag Bhimplasi and Bradley D’Souza's electric guitar before Mai Dhai brings in sounds from Tharparkar. Akbar Ali and the Zain Zohaib qawwali troupe lead the devotional passage; Zara Madani and Wajiha Naqvi sing over the closing section, with Arif Bahalim reciting Allama Iqbal. Saad Hayat is credited as assistant music producer. The shifts are built into the recording's four timed movements, from classical to folk, qawwali and an atmospheric finale. Dawn's writers later described hearing the music while approaching the pavilion, where its changing voices met Rashid Rana's reflective facade.
Meaning & Translation
Lala-e-Sehrai means “Flower of the Desert.” The image suggests beauty and persistence where survival looks unlikely. The soundtrack conveys its meaning through a sequence of voices and traditions. A measured classical beginning opens into Thar folk song, gathers the communal intensity of qawwali, then settles into airy voices and a recitation of Allama Iqbal. Heard together, these changes evoke different regions, histories and spiritual expressions within Pakistan. The flower holds those contrasts in one image: rooted in a demanding landscape, yet vivid and alive. The spacious final passage leaves that image open for the listener to consider.
