The Story Behind Lutf Woh Ishq Mein
Hadiqa Kiani performed Lutf Woh Ishq Mein as a live tribute to Farida Khanum at Lahore's Alhamra Art Centre in 2020. The Urdu ghazal sets poetry by Dagh Dehlvi, whose words also feature in Khanum's repertoire. Kiani's official channel published this 9:25 performance on 5 March 2020.
The concert, titled Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo, was the inaugural event of the Salman Sufi Foundation's Aik Shaam series, created with Alhamra to celebrate veteran artists. Farida Khanum attended as the guest of honour, while Wusatullah Khan moderated a conversation with her, Kiani and Ali Sethi. The refrain at the end of each couplet gives the ghazal a repeated point of return. This recording preserves Kiani's individual contribution to an evening connecting contemporary performers with the musical heritage they were honouring.
Meaning & Translation
Lutf Woh Ishq Mein can be understood as "the pleasures found in love." Dagh's ghazal places that pleasure beside suffering: the same attachment that brings delight can also leave a person wounded. The recurring phrase about the heart knowing suggests an experience too private for anyone else to measure.
The speaker addresses a beloved whose gestures remain lodged in memory, even while affection brings humiliation and estrangement. Love's joy and pain are held together, with the heart bearing witness to both. This gives the poem its romantic melancholy: closeness survives as an inward feeling, even when the relationship leaves the lover isolated.
