The Story Behind Mahi
Mahi is Hadiqa Kiani's Punjabi pop song from Rung, her third album, released in 2002. Khawar Kiani wrote the words, while Irfan Kiani and Hadiqa share the composition credit. Irfan also produced the album. The recording's instrumental credits include Arshad Ali on tabla and Ustad Tanveer Hussain on sarod, with music arrangement by Shani Arshad, credited as Zeeshan Haider.
Asim Raza's 2003 music video gives the song an unusual visual setting: Kiani plays a vampire-like outsider whom others reject because of her appearance. Blue-toned imagery, constructed sets and computer animation frame a story about prejudice and the harm of stereotypes. The official channel's July 2021 upload preserves that earlier video, bringing an album-era recording into Kiani's online archive.
Meaning & Translation
Mahi is Punjabi for a beloved or sweetheart. The song addresses a lover who seems unaware of the singer's distress, making affection feel painfully unequal. Her thoughts keep returning to him, while he appears distant and unconcerned. Images of captivity and entanglement present love as something she cannot simply step away from. Turning to God expresses how difficult it is to make another person understand a private sorrow. The repeated appeal carries longing and hurt together: she still wants closeness, but also wants her suffering to be recognised. It is a lament for emotional distance, shaped by attachment that survives disappointment.
