The Story Behind Main Kamli Da Dhola (Live)
Main Kamli Da Dhola brings Hadiqa Kiani's Saraiki folk singing to a Virsa Heritage Revived concert at Lahore's Haveli Barood Khana. The video appeared in June 2018, after Kiani introduced the song as the first chapter of her Wajd project in 2017. This upload credits Mian Yousaf Salahuddin with the presentation and Irfan Kiani with the music arrangement, mixing, mastering and production. Ustad Baqir Abbas plays flute, Steve George guitar and baghlama, Asif Ali Goga tabla, and Irfan Kiani and Imran Ali harmoniums. The credited flute, strings and tabla give Kiani's lead an acoustic folk setting. Irfan, Ali, Raja, Amjad and Dilawar add clapping and backing vocals, giving the performance an ensemble character beyond its solo billing.
Meaning & Translation
The title's kamli is a woman driven almost mad by love; dhola is an affectionate address to the beloved. The singer speaks from a place where affection and distress are inseparable: she wants the loved one close, yet the uncertainty of that bond leaves her restless. The recurring call to the beloved is less a neat declaration than a way of living through absence. In the folk setting, longing becomes something shared and sung aloud, even while the words remain intensely personal. It can be heard as a lover asking for tenderness and sincerity. The language of devotion also allows the beloved to stand for a spiritual presence beyond ordinary romance.
