The Story Behind Maula
Released in April 2022, Maula was announced as the first single from Ali Zafar's album project Husn, following an eleven-year gap since Jhoom. Zafar composed, arranged, produced and sang the devotional piece, setting words by Kaamil Hyderabadi. The recording builds its Sufi atmosphere through tabla and dholak patterns, with flute, santoor, guitar, bass and sarangi adding colour around the vocal. Waleed Akram directed the video at Sheesh Mahal in Lahore Fort, where whirling dancers turn spiritual longing into movement. Zafar described Husn as a journey beyond ordinary perception, toward a space of music, silence and light. That idea gives Maula its shape: a sustained invocation whose acoustic textures gradually open into an expansive, meditative arrangement.

Maula is an Urdu word of Arabic origin meaning lord or master, and here it addresses God as the source of guidance. The song is a devotional appeal shaped by surrender rather than a romantic declaration. Its speaker looks beyond the limits of everyday perception, seeking closeness to a truth that words and argument cannot contain. Repetition makes the title feel like both prayer and breath, while the circling rhythm suggests a seeker returning to the same sacred centre. Images of silence, darkness and inner light frame spiritual discovery as something felt rather than explained.
