The Story Behind Meri Dastan-e-Hasrat
Ustad Amanat Ali Khan's rendition of "Meri Dastan-e-Hasrat" brings Saifuddin Saif's Urdu ghazal into the Patiala gharana singer's repertoire. The poem addresses someone who repeatedly tested a lover, then cried on hearing the lover's account of longing. Rekhta identifies Saif as its poet and includes Amanat Ali Khan's performance among recordings of the work. EMI Pakistan issued the track on its 1978 album Raag Se Ghazal Tak, long before this YouTube copy appeared in 2008.
The uploaded performance runs nearly eight minutes, giving the ghazal's returning image of tears a spacious setting. A private account of heartbreak becomes something shared: even the person who caused the hurt is moved by hearing it told aloud.
Meaning & Translation
"Meri Dastan-e-Hasrat" means "my tale of longing." The speaker has told his story of disappointed love so often that the person listening finally weeps, although that same person had tested his devotion. The sorrow changes hands: what began as one person's wound becomes something the other person can feel.
Saifuddin Saif returns to the image of tears to show how a confession can unsettle both speaker and listener. The ghazal leaves room for regret on each side. Its ache comes from being understood only after the damage has been done, when sharing the story can no longer undo it.
