The Story Behind Mori Araj Suno
Mori Araj Suno brought Tina Sani back to a studio recording after more than a decade for Coke Studio Pakistan's third season in 2010. The performance grew from a setting she had developed years earlier with composer Arshad Mehmood for a play. Sani later joined its supplicatory opening to Faiz Ahmed Faiz's Punjabi poem Rabba Sachya, creating a suite that moves through Braj, Punjabi and Urdu. Rohail Hyatt produced the session and suggested Arieb Azhar's spoken entrance near the close, where the intimate plea widens into reflection. Sani's classically grounded vocal starts almost as private prayer, then gathers force against the ensemble before yielding to Azhar's measured recitation. The arrangement gives two Faiz poems a single dramatic arc, balancing spiritual longing with the poet's insistence on human dignity and responsibility.
Meaning & Translation
Mori Araj Suno means "listen to my plea." The opening addresses a spiritual guide and asks that pain, longing and the need for dignity be heard. Faiz then turns the prayer inward. The seeker discovers that the hand expected to rescue them, the shore where their boat might rest and the remedy sought for sorrow all point back to the self. The movement from devotional appeal to self-recognition gives the song its tension: faith is not passive waiting, but a demand to recognize human agency. Its Braj, Punjabi and Urdu passages carry the same emotional thread, moving from humble supplication through protest toward an awakening of responsibility.
