The Story Behind Nazaar Eyle
Nazaar Eyle brought Zeb Bangash and Haniya Aslam's Turkish repertoire to Coke Studio Pakistan's third season in 2010. Their version revisits the song written and composed by Turkish artist Barış Manço, with Rohail Hyatt producing the session. The repeated refrain and quick, off-centre pulse give its chain of folk-tale images a playful forward motion, while the duo keep the melody clear and conversational.
The choice became a striking example of the pair's interest in musical connections beyond Pakistan. In a later Aspen Institute interview, Zeb and Haniya recalled that listeners responded far more warmly than advisers had predicted, and that audiences in India would call for the Turkish song by name. That reception helped deepen their curiosity about cultural links across Central and South Asia.
Meaning & Translation
Nazar eyle is Turkish for look or take notice, an invitation to pay attention as a chain of exaggerated scenes unfolds. The verses work like a folk tale or counting rhyme: a ruler goes to war, nine sons grow into warriors, forty couples celebrate an immense wedding, and a small bird meets an absurdly cruel fate.
Those images are less a single plot than a playful parade of abundance, danger and reversal. The refrain repeatedly brings the listener back to the storyteller, while the final turn leaves Barış wondering what remains for him. Zeb and Haniya preserve that comic, storybook quality, so the song feels communal and mischievous rather than solemn.
