The Story Behind Paharon Ki Qasam
Ali Zafar released Paharon Ki Qasam on 17 February 2021 as a tribute to Pakistani mountaineer Muhammad Ali Sadpara, who had gone missing during a winter K2 expedition. The recording revisits a folk ballad written, composed and originally sung by Kamal Mahsud decades earlier. Its plea for an absent beloved acquired a stark new resonance beside images from Sadpara's life and the mountains he climbed. Zafar produced and sang the rendition, with Baqir Abbass on flute and Amir Azhar on guitar, rubab and bass guitar. The arrangement keeps the song's swaying folk character while flute and rubab give its longing a distinctly mountain-borne texture. What began as a love song rooted in Pashtun geography became a public act of remembrance for a climber closely identified with Pakistan's highest peaks.
Meaning & Translation
Paharon ki qasam means "by the mountains" or "for the sake of the mountains." The song addresses someone whose return is desperately awaited. Memory refuses to fade, while the wind, clouds, waterfalls and changing season seem to share the speaker's loneliness. In Kamal Mahsud's original conception, that journey through harsh terrain was a Pashtun image of romantic devotion: distance makes love feel both physical and emotional. Ali Zafar's tribute shifts the same words toward loss and remembrance. Heard beside Ali Sadpara's story, the absent beloved becomes the mountaineer, and the mountains are no longer scenery alone. They stand as witnesses to courage, separation and a hope that cannot yet accept farewell.
