The Story Behind Payal
Payal captures Hadiqa Kiani's live tribute to Farida Khanum at Lahore's Alhamra Art Centre in March 2020. The performance revisits the Urdu song known as Main Ne Pairon Mein Payal, written by Tasleem Fazli and composed by Khalil Ahmed for Farida Khanum.
The concert, titled Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo, was organised by the Salman Sufi Foundation, with journalist Wusatullah Khan moderating a conversation involving Khanum, Kiani and Ali Sethi. Kiani's official channel released this six-minute-and-fifty-two-second performance on 6 March 2020 as Part 5 of its coverage. At the centre of the song is the anklet image in its opening refrain, a small detail that gives the performance its name and connects it to Khanum's repertoire.
Meaning & Translation
Payal means an anklet, often fitted with small bells that ring as the wearer moves. The opening image presents a speaker who has not fastened anklets to her feet. That absence makes the ornament something to interpret, rather than simply something she is wearing.
In a romantic reading, the anklet's association with movement and sound suggests emotions that become noticeable before they are openly confessed. A familiar piece of jewellery becomes a way to describe an inward change. The song's tenderness rests in the distance between outward appearance and private feeling, inviting the listener to recognise love through suggestion.
