The Story Behind Qalandar OST
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sings the title track of Qalandar, the 7th Sky Entertainment serial that Har Pal Geo premiered on 14 October 2022. The channel released the song three days ahead of the first episode, so the audience met the melody before it met the characters.
Composer Shani Arshad and lyricist Sabir Zafar open it on an invocation rather than a romantic hook, which is rare for a prime time OST and puts the serial's argument up front: faith is what carries its characters through. Qalandar ran 60 episodes until 23 April 2023, produced by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi, directed by Saima Waseem, written by Samra Bukhari, and led by Muneeb Butt, Komal Meer and Ali Abbas.
Meaning & Translation
A qalandar is a wandering Sufi ascetic, someone who gives up rank, comfort and even respectability and answers to God alone. In Pakistan the word carries the memory of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and the shrine at Sehwan, so it arrives already loaded with the idea of surrender.
Sabir Zafar uses that idea as a posture rather than a character. The refrain is addressed straight upward, "Allah Sain ve" and "Maula Sain ve", roughly "O Allah, my master" and "O Lord, my master", repeated the way a devotee repeats a name until asking turns into acceptance. What the song offers in return is not rescue from hardship but mercy inside it: the sorrow does not vanish, it stops being carried alone.
